The process of remodeling can be an exciting and challenging time.  There is so much to consider- the prices, the contractors, and how to get it all done in a timely fashion.  But there are some items that are forgotten, that are extremely important. We are here to help you remember them!

  • Be realistic with what you want, where you want it, and how you will afford it.  It is easy to say that you want to add an addition to your house, but you first have to consider whether you have capacity on your current electrical service to provide electricity to a whole new wing for your home.  There is much to consider, and being logical about the small details, will go a long way.
  • Research what you like and what you don’t like.  Pinterest is a great space to create organized boards of all your ideas.  And once you begin to find them, research the prices that will work best within your given budget.  Find out which contractors can best do the work you need- at the budget that you require.
  • Get advice from those you trust.  For years I saw beautiful photos of gorgeous white tile floors in bathrooms.  When remodeling my own space, I was thrilled to put them in.  Within 3 weeks, I was over the allure, realizing that they showed dirt and grime so easily.  They need to be cleaned constantly.  If I had asked my friends, they could have told me the same thing.
  • Consider the future you plan to have in that home. If you are expecting to grow old in the home and raise kids, it is important to make decisions that are beneficial for the long term.  However, if you expect to move within a year or two, look towards the market of what people in that area are buying.  Although you may like blue cabinets, if you sell this house in a year, others may not feel the same.  Make decisions based on the financial gain you can receive when you sell in the nearer future.
  • Finally, and most importantly, older homes often have fewer restrooms.  So be sure to take care of your essential needs while remodeling.  If the water to your home will be shut off during the remodeling phase, you will want to make sure that you still have a place to clean, wash dishes, and take care of “business”.  A big part of this comes from finding the right porta potty company that will provide you with a clean and well maintained portable restroom so that your family doesn’t feel like they are out in the woods.  Make sure that it’s supplied by a reliable company, like Omaha Porta Potty Co. where they ensure that facilities are cleaned and maintained on a regular basis.  Your family will thank you for it.

In the end, you’ll be so happy to have your “new” new home, and we wish you well with the process!
